The Biggest News Story IN THE WORLD…Brings Back Less Than 800,000 Results On Google

I think I must be going for the worlds longest post title, how did I do? 😉

Unless you have been living under a rock the past few days, you will already know about the worlds biggest scientific experiment that started today. I’m no scientist, but in short, scientists are going to re-create the “Big Bang” that created the universe. (Allegedly)

Depending on who you listen to, this will either tell us how the universe was formed and lead to better cancer treatments, or it will go horribly wrong and we’ll be sucked into a huge black hole and spend the rest of eternity floating around in “black matter” whilst hungry aliens feast on our humble remains.

Nooooooo

The story is so big that even Google are getting in on the action, if you are reading this post today (Wednesday the 10th September 2008), head on over to the Google home page and take a look at the Google logo.

If you are reading this after the day it was written, here’s a screen shot of the page so you don’t feel left out:

Google love a logo change

The image around the logo isn’t some kinky S&M device, it’s actually an image of the “Large Hadron Collider” (I think) from which the experiment will be run. If you then click on the image on the Google home page, it takes you to the search results for “Large Hadron Collider”.

And this is where my search engine marketing mind kicked in.

This is the biggest news story in THE WORLD today, no matter where you live, if you put the news on TV you will see something about this experiment. So you’d expect Google to be overflowing with millions of organic search results, and loads of Adwords ad’s selling books and DVD’s on related subjects.

BUT on Google there are less than 800,000 results, and even more surprisingly there are ZERO adwords ad’s! (On google.co.uk, .com had 1 ad)

Less than 1m results

The Mac loves adwords

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but can you imagine if you had started to build up a site containing information on the project when this was first mentioned a couple of years ago? With less than 800,000 results on Google, an old website with a good domain name and content would be absolutely overflowing with traffic today.

You could have monetized with Google Adsense or sold related products via the Amazon affiliate program, your main concern would be if your server could handle all the traffic!

I think it’s probably too late now to jump on the LHC band wagon, but you can see how easy it is to miss out on an opportunity. This project has been no secret, yet it seems that very few people had the hindsight to profit from this massive worldwide event.

I for one will be keeping a very close eye on any future worldwide news items!

And to finish off I’ll put your mind at ease by saying that the actual “Collision” that will re-create the big bang isn’t due to happen until mid-October, so there are a couple more blog posts left before the end….and if you want to check the current status of the project to see if it has destroyed the world yet, you can do so here:

Thanks for reading, and as always feel free to leave a comment!

Regards,
Dan

P.S. The website link in my closing paragraph is an awesome example of a viral website, just a shame they haven’t monetized, they could have made a killing!

Well I rarely bother with the news….

I always figure if it’s really important like the end of the world – someone would tell me…

You’ve just proven my theory Dan 🙂

So I know I really don’t need to bother with newspapers and TV…. hehe

  2. Hehe – actually, Dan Brown did cash in on something similar than this in ‘Angels and Demons’, but that’s not online of course.

Seriously though, it’s a good take on a different marketing strategy, and actually, if you keep up with emerging niche news, it probably won’t be too hard to predict what eventually trickles into the mainstream… one or two months later.

Wow, Dan…I read your post before the coffee was done…woke me up!

The end of the world, Huh? I’m not ready for that event yet…need a haircut and some new earrings.

Seriously…your post gave me a couple of ideas to think about and that’s rarely happened before my morning coffee.

The source code for that page was interesting.. they have google-analytics on the page and a few more gems.. This may be my last post because I’m not wasting time on the computer with the possible “end” just around the corner 🙂

See Ya on the other side! Mike

I just followed your link…no wasted words there.

I hadn’t looked at the source of that page, but now you mention it…. 🙂

  7. Harry says:

    Hi,

There are not doubt many other significant events that dont have many pages devoted to them.

I cant quite see how you could monetize a page about CERN, though I guess you could use it as an on ramp to an History of the Internet or Internet 101 site – Tim Berners Lee, was working there when he came with html.

The message on the linked site is incorrect …it should be “Not Ye….”

    thats funnyyyyyyyy!

Did you see this in the source code?:

‘the first person to ask for an RSS feed gets a free black hole in their junk’

Mawahahahahahahaaaaa . . . .in fact with that sense of humour are you SURE this isn’t one of your sites Dan?

    Great post btw

    Richard

  9. Dan (el_passo) says:

@ Harry, I do think it would be difficult, but even if you used it purely as an informational (is that even a word?) site you could make loads just by putting adsense on the page.

@ Richard, Having now looked at the source code I love the site even more. Wonder if he’ll change the message in October when everything is supposed to go BANG?

  10. Richard says:

There’s now two Adwords ads now Dan! They must be reading your blog. Ones for B&Q saying:

    ‘We Don’t Sell Hadron Colliders
But Have Great Deals on DIY’

and the other is for some estate agent type site:

‘You Can’t Sell A Hadron Collider
But Can Sell Your Property For Free’

I wonder if they’ll get any clickthroughs or sales?

  11. Dan (el_passo) says:

LOL, that B&Q advert is great, I didn’t know their marketing department were readers of the blog 🙂

  12. Dominique says:

What is the interest in making money on this subject since these scientists planned to put their hands on the antimatter? When they’ll have it, they’ll create a blackhole to find out – to find out what? Nothing since the world would disappear… In this case, no need to make money any more 😉
I am sorry, I have no other comment about the subject: this is too shocking news and thinking that some people make money on it is even more shoking.

  13. Hey Dan,

You know why it’s not splattered all over the net don’t you? I may regret saying this but it’s because there has not been a major catastrophe (yet!). People just aren’t interested if things go right! You can bet your bottom dollar that if aliens started arising from the LHC shooting ray guns then it would probably crash the net! 🙂
Anyway, since you posted this there has been a few more people interested .. 28 million more!

    Later,

    Dave.

  14. You know Dan, I think Dave is onto something! And he’s right in actual fact, well at least in my eyes!

The whole ‘story’ has been quite interesting to read actually, and to the point that some people have received death threats, it’s different. (Can I say that, does it sound right?!)

Anyway, I’m off to battle with some Aliens!

    Thanks
    Mark

  15. Dan (el_passo) says:

Very true Dave, we really need one of the scientists to have a secret family of Aliens living in his basement, i’m sure that would set tongues wagging a bit!

Or….just get some more pics of the worlds hottest scientist 🙂

  16. Hi

So just to clarify, Dan, a black hole will be destroying the Earth in mid October…….. and not today,

    PHEW!!

    Stuart

http://www.printsmakeprofits.com a hidden eBay niche BURSTING with PROFIT

  17. Haha .. No way does she work there, she’s far too hot to be a scientist, unless … She’s an alien in disguise! 😉

  18. michael says:

Sorry i missed something in here, thought the world was going to end ?

  19. Dan (el_passo) says:

It did Michael, we are all posting from our space capsuals, did you miss it? 🙂
