Questions That Need Answers
Hello everyone, let me start by welcoming you to this weeks “Slightly Different” newsletter. The difference being that I need your help this time!
As you may (or may not) know, I do A LOT of work helping people with various web design problems. These things range from teaching people how to FTP, mastering Dreamweaver and so on.
I have a big project on the go that is aimed at helping out those people – you could even be one of them! That are struggling to come to grips with web design or would just like to gain more information on the subject.
Part of the project will be a massive Q&A session answering people’s web design problems. (Can you see where i’m heading with this ;-)) That’s where you come in – I need you to ask me questions!
I don’t care what type of question you ask, it can be anything:
– HTML
– Dreamweaver
– CPanel
– Outlook Express
– SEO
– CSS
– PSP
– MYSQL
Literally anything!
What I would request of you today is that you submit your question in the comments section of this post. Please could you include the following:
1. Your Name
2. Your location (UK, US, Australia etc..)
3. Your Question
Also if you have a website feel free to give it a quick plug 😉
Thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing your questions!
I will of course be keeping you updated on this project throughout the coming months.
Until next time,
Dan

Hi Dan:
I own an ebay store and a few others on various auction sites. I need to learn so many things…
I very much need to learn “html”. I don’t even know what “html” means! It seems very difficult to learn and understand so I do need guidance for a beginner to help me learn “html”.
Thank you very much for all of your help and being so generous with your time.

Hi Dan (my mentor)
The one thing which I would like to see is a basic beginners guide to CPanel, it can seem quite daunting at first site, with all those icons, most of which I haven’t dare to use yet. CPanel for idiots would be a dream for newbies and oldies alike. I appreciate that there is a cpanel manual but like most manuals it would involve days of continual reading, which is ok unless you are wanting to know about things such as setting up a forum or chat room….and by the way what do all those other icons do?
I would also like to thank you for all your time and patience with me over the past few months, without you I would still be learning HTML let alone have websites which are up and running. You are one in a million and greatly appreciated.

It must be your lucky day Heidi, I have almost finished my Video Cpanel guide! Just a few more sections to go 🙂
My biggest problem is with cascading style sheets. I just don’t quite get it.
I’d also like to be able to design my own templates and learn how to work with templates which are freely available.
Thanks,
Jan
Dan, it would be interesting to see something on creating CSS/PHP/MySQL simple templates for web site development. E.G., a header, a menu sidebar, a footer, perhaps an ad sidebar, a central content section.
The idea would be to “white box” site development by plugging in whichever pieces are needed rather than creating a complete entity from scratch.
To illustrate, in case I didn’t communicate that well, I have a menu module that I plug into almost every site. I adjust colour via the CSS include, then modify one PHP segment to select the proper database and modify a query to extract the appropriate menu elements.
It would be interesting to see this process codified by someone with a better skill set.
(I can show you an example if I’m still not clear.)
Make a good day …

Hi Barney,
That’s a good idea. I will have to look into it, although the answer will probably be quite a long one 😉
When it comes to Outlook Express, I’m totally lost. I can’t get it to retrieve my email from yahoo or any other web email account. I don’t even know what my email address is for Outlook Express lol. I just need to know how to link it to my email accounts and find out what my address is. I’m using the most recent version. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

I have a website which I need to add pages to – forum, newsletter and additional information. I also want to add additional ebooks. Advice on such basic adaptations would be very helpful. Also how do I add an opt-in list form. In fact how do I add forms of any sort? Any help would be great, Thanks
Greetings Dan,
I have no particular suggestion, but from the questions/comments so far I think you will have a great success with this project.
I wishs you well and I will folow this project with interest.
Kindest regards,
Andreas Krokene.
Hi Dan,
I have recently set up my own website to run alongside my ebay shop. Although I have had sales, sales are slow. I have not spent any time on marketing the site , which explains why I havent had many sales. My question to is, which sites are best to market your website on, eg ebook forums, linking, blogs? etc any help appreciated.
There are lots of things i would like to learn espcecially would like to make some adsense web site templates.
Also i love learning from videos rather than reading.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, you have given me plenty to go on!
I agree with you about videos Jason, it is so much easier when you actually see someone doing it on screen rather than following text.
I will keep you all updated with regular progress reports!
I get several hundred visitors to my site, (a php/mysql portal) but very few sign up as members and it converts poorly. What is the fastest way, with basically no money to invest, to get a site producing?
Hi Dan,
If you are using two service providers and both uses Outlook Express, how do you avoid interaction between them when accessing your emails. I at present have the problem where one set of email is arriving OPENED in the inbox. The other set of email is ok. I have been trying to solve the problem with the aid of one of the provider, without any success.
Another question I would like to ask is how do you upload websites, and information to the sites.
Even when I am following information to do so, it never seem to work for me.
Hi Dan,
I need to build a “Login” page, as part of my website must be available only to registered users. How do I do that.
I think judging by all the questions that Dan will be busy for sometime !
Best of luck with your new “project”
sally 🙂
I think you are right Sally, you have all given me plenty of things to work on, thanks!
Hi Dan
Ever since I set up my website I’ve never used the email addresses as I don’t understand how they work! I’ve got external email of course, but I just don’t get how to set up the website ones – any help appreciated.
thanks & good luck
Lorna
Hi Lorna,
Do you mean an address that includes your own domain, like:
you@yoursite.com?
Hi Dan,
In cpanel if I add another domain, it adds it as a subdomain to my existing domain. Does this mean that it gets spidered along with the original, or will search engines know to keep it separate?
Thanks,
Dave.
Hi Dave,
If you link to the sub-domain then it will get spidered with the rest of your site.
If however you are using an addon domain and link to the full url (www.yoursite.com) the spiders will see it as a seperate site, not a sub-domain.
Cheers Dan,
Didn’t want everything spidering as one site

Hi
I have purchased a website on ebay. Seller said it was in html which I can change in Front Page. But it actually is in .php.
http://www.NewWeddingStuff.com
What program do I use to view the website and make changes to it.
I tried Frontpage but it didnt work.
Thanks
I got another tip off another fourm about saving .php files.
If using note pad you need to put the file in quotes before
saving. it.
“weddingplanner.php”
thanks for your blog.
I will be buying your program next week.
Joe Rahall
Hi Joe,
You can edit PHP pages just like you would HTML. I create just about all of my sites as PHP now, it’s exactly the same as HTML but lets you use dynamic content.
If you open up your file in notepad you will be able to see that the code should look familiar!
I’m afraid to say putting the filename in quotes is a load of rubbish as well, you can save a page as .php in notepad simply by naming it whatever.php and choosing “All files” from the save as type drop down box.
Thanks,
Dan
